When two of Rita’s friends from Penn invited us to their wedding in San Diego #maxiella, we were excited to spend the long weekend in the area. We booked our flights to depart after work on Thursday, and rented a car for our trip. We stayed in the San Diego Marriott in La Jolla, where the Shabbat Chattan was taking place.
Friday
San Diego Zoo – After stopping by the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, we went to the famous San Diego Zoo to meet some of Rita’s friends and see the animals. The Zoo was really big, and we saw zebras, giraffes, hippos, elephants and more. After the zoo, we walked around the Seaport Village, but there wasn’t much to do there.
Sunday
USS Midway Museum – Sunday morning, we went to the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier in service since the end of WWII. The ship had many aircraft from US history, and talked to some veterans onboard who were commemorating memorial day. It was cool to see how the planes launched off the aircraft and how the crew lived onboard.
La Jolla Kayak – In the afternoon we took a kayak tour in La Jolla. Rita was very scared to get in the boats, but it was a lot of fun. We explored the shore and exploring the cliffs and the sea lions that call them home. We even tasted some of the seaweed pods floating in the sea.
That night, we celebrated our friends’ wedding in the San Diego Museum of Art
Monday
La Jolla Cove – Sunny Jim’s Cave was a fun stop in the La Jolla area. We went down a 143 stair flight of stairs into a cave on the water with cool views.
Coronado Beach – We spent the rest of the day enjoying the beach in Coronado. The beach was huge and crowded for the holiday weekend, and we saw some professional sandcastles being built for a competition.

That night, we flew home on a redeye after a quick stopover in LAX.
